Right to Read is a major campaign launched 6 years ago to improve literacy standards amongst 7-11 year olds across Yorkshire.
Loop volunteers spend a hour a week in local schools such as Thornbury Primary School, working with youngsters on a one to one basis helping to improve their reading skills.
Studies have shown that one to one reading for one hour a week overa 12 week period can advance a childs reading age by more than 6 months. Our employees find the experience really worthwhile and gain immense personal satisfaction from see the benefits of their community involvement.
"I originally chose to do Right to Read as I felt I wanted to give something back to the community. Its a fantastic experience meeting and getting to know your child. At the end of their programme when they have progressed and developed, its a lovely feeling to think that you have helped play a small part in their lives, helped them with their reading and made an impact in their future."
Amandy Oddy, Regional Review Team Manager
"I get a sense of enjoyment from Right to Read and hopefully I pass on my love of reading to the children, It also helps maintain contact with the younger generation. At the school where I have been helping children read for the last 5 years it is multi ethnic, they are able to ask questions about my family and our lifestyle and I can ask them about their families building a better knowledge of each other way of life."
